How to Measure

Determine your type of cabinets, this information will help you determine how to measure your doors as well as the type of hinges needed for each of the cabinet styles.

Face Frame cabinets:

Framed cabinets have a frame around the front edge of the cabinet box, usually between 1 ½” to 2” wide.
The Hinge Plate is attached to the frame. The hinge is attached to the routered door hole. The overlay of the frame by the door determines the size of your openning. Example:

A ½” overlay hinge is used on door which overlay the frame on all sides by ½”. This is the most common overlay size.

Frameless - European Style (Full-overlay) cabinets:

Frameless cabinets do not have a face frame around it.
Hinges are mounted on the side on the inside of the cabinet box. A European hinge is used with frameless cabinet.

Measuring Cabinet Doors:

On frame Measure the openings – it is recommended to measure door sizes horizontal (width) x vertical (height). Frame cabinets with double doors have a center mallion.
Record openings. Width size first x Height second.
Repeat the steps for all of your doors & drawer fronts.

Choose Hinge Overlay:

Measure Face Frame dimensions of your cabinets.
Choose the Hinge size you would like to use for your cabinet doors – ½” Overlay is the most common size and easier to use, but other sizes can be used depending on if you would like to cover ½” of the frame or as much as 1 ½” to cover most of your frame.

Adding overlay to your opening size:

Once you have chosen the hinge overlay, you need to add it to your opening sizes
Single Doors (A ½” overlay for example):

If your opening is 9"w X 27"h
Then you would add 1" to the width, and 1” to the height, so the door size you would need to order would be 10”w X 28”h to accommodate for a 1/2" overlay all the way around the opening.

Double doors (Again, a ½” overlay for example):

If your opening is 27"w X 27"h
Then you would add 1" to the width, and 1" to the height = 28”w x 28”h
You would then subtract 1/8” of an inch from the width (28 – 0.125 = 27.875”)
Then divide that by 2. (27.875 / 2 = 13.93”)
This will give you the width of each door that you need to order = 2 doors 13.93” w x 28
